Joseph Donald Brewer Scholarship Fund

Founded by parents Abigail Richon and William D. Brewer for Urbana High School graduating seniors with dyslexia.

With only one class remaining to fulfill his high school graduation requirements, Joseph Donald Brewer was motivated to attend night school as well as his normal day classes, during the spring of his junior year. He accomplished early graduation, in 2001 from Urbana High. Joe did not allow his dyslexia to slow his dreams. That summer he started attending Lincoln Technical School, where he excelled in automotive technology and electronics. While at Lincoln, his classmates nicknamed him “Jesus” because of his long hair, gentle ways, and kind heart. Outside of school, Joe enjoyed rock climbing, sailing, kayaking and fishing. His parents, Abigail Richon and William D. Brewer established The Joseph Donald Brewer Scholarship Fund after losing Joe in August 2002. The fund provides scholarships in Joe’s name to graduating seniors who have dyslexia. Although first established for Urbana High School seniors, the scholarship is now open to all Frederick County graduating seniors with dyslexia or other learning issues.
