Food Insecurity Grants Awarded to 13 Local Organizations

FREDERICK, MD – July 12, 2023: The Community Foundation of Frederick County, in partnership with Frederick County Government, recently awarded $350,000 in grants to 13 local nonprofit organizations to assist with food insecurity initiatives.

Applicants provided details on how their program alleviates food insecurity, determines project or service outcomes, and identifies evaluation tools and processes. The following nonprofits received these single-year, one-time grants that must be spent by June 30, 2024:

Blessings in a Backpack, Frederick Chapter received a $75,000 grant to support general operations for the weekend food program for youth.

Brunswick Ecumenical Assistance Committee On Needs, Inc. received a $25,000 grant to support expansion of the infrastructure for the Brunswick Food Bank.

Frederick Community College Foundation received a $10,000 grant to expand access to food choices for vulnerable students.

Friends for Neighborhood Progress received a $63,300 grant to support vehicle and food purchases, as well as staff expansion.

Hood College received a $37,200 grant to support facilities repair and improvements, as well as enhanced programming, for the Revitalizing Frederick Food Security Network, a community gardening program from the Hood College Center for Coastal and Watershed Studies.

Islamic Society of Frederick, Inc. received a $6,000 grant to purchase new freezers for food distribution programs.

Maryland Food Bank received a $50,000 grant to support food distribution and hunger relief programs in Frederick County.

Maryland Hunger Solutions received a $20,000 grant to support and expand services in Frederick County, including outreach, advocacy, collaboration, and technical assistance programs.

Platoon 22 received a $7,500 grant to expand food distribution opportunities for veterans, active-duty military, and their families.

Steadfast – Standing Firm Against Youth Homelessness, Inc. received a $25,000 grant to support food purchases, as well as cooking and shopping classes.

Supporting Older Adults through Resources, Inc. (SOAR) received a $20,000 grant to support grocery delivery to vulnerable homebound seniors.

Thurmont Senior Center, Inc. received a $5,000 grant to support center lunches and home delivery meal programs.

YMCA of Frederick County received a $6,000 grant to support those who are food vulnerable through the Hungry Harvest SNAP Market, a reduced cost community produce market.
