Parsons Newman Memorial Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. John D. Hendrickson II for grants to Heritage Frederick to host historical lectures in Mr. Newman’s name.

Born in the City of Frederick on January 10, 1897, Parsons Newman was the son of John Shaw Newman and Amy Rebecca Parsons. After graduating from Boys High School in Frederick on 1914, Mr. Newman attended University of Virginia, where he earned both undergraduate and law degrees. In between his degrees, he served in World War I. After earning his law degree, Mr. Newman returned to Frederick, where he practiced law for more than 50 years, concentrating in real estate property, trust and estate matters, and financial and general corporation work. He was chair of one of the Frederick County Draft Boards and a member of the Maryland State Board of Bar Examiners, evaluating applicants for admission to the bar. He served as President of the Frederick County Bar Association and as a member of the Maryland and American Bar Associations. In 1922, he ran for and was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates for a four-year term. In addition to a successful legal profession, Mr. Newman married Margaret Frances Besant, his wife of 37 years. He was active in the Frederick County community as president of the Frederick Kiwanis Club, the Historical Society of Frederick County, and the Community Chest, now known as United Way. He was a trustee of St. James School, Hood College, Home for the Aged (Record Street Home), and the C. Burr Artz Library. Moreover, Mr. Newman was an involved lifelong member of All Saints Episcopal Church. Among his personal passions, Mr. Newman enjoyed attending the Great Frederick Fair, cheering for the New York Yankees, collecting stamps, and studying history. He passed away on September 10, 1984 at the age of 87. To honor his memory and to remember his life, friends Mr. and Mrs. John D. Hendrickson II turned to the Community Foundation to establish The Parsons Newman Memorial Fund to provide funds to Heritage Frederick (formerly known as Historical Society of Frederick County) for a series of lectures known as the P. Newman Lecture Series.

Founded by the Kavanaughs to support The Joan and Gordon Swarthout Fund at Hickok Center for Brain Injury, Inc. in Rochester, New York and Centro De Apoyo in Riverdale, Maryland. Paul Kavanaugh is Joan Swarthout’s nephew and wanted to establish a memorial fund in her honor that family and friends could contribute to for years to come.

Paul Luther Stine, Jr. Memorial Fund

Founded by sister Alice Jean Stine for grants to nonprofit organizations providing for the rescue and well-being of horses.

Paul Luther Stine, Jr. was born on October 20, 1938, the son of Paul and Julia Stine. Growing up in Knoxville, he worked with his family in farming. He was a lifelong member of the Petersville Lutheran Chapel and enjoyed collecting horse-related items, miniature school buses, bells, key chains, and letter openers. Alice Jean Stine, who created The Paul Luther Stine, Jr. Memorial Fund to honor her brother’s memory, shares that Paul, though mentally challenged, “was a man of great strength who survived a difficult birth and lived a good and productive life with his parents and sister who cared for and about him.” The fund provides grants to nonprofit organizations providing for the rescue and well-being of horses to commemorate Paul’s love of animals.

Paul Luther Stine, Sr. Memorial Fund

Founded by daughter Alice Jean Stine for grants to promote agriculture as a career, agricultural educational youth programs, or saving of animals after their productive lives are over.

Paul Luther Stine, Sr. of Knoxville worked for the Frederick County Board of Education for 38 years as a driver. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Petersville. Mr. Stine was best known as a farmer, and the fund created in his memory by his daughter Alice Jean Stine captures his dedication to farming. The Paul L. Stine, Sr. Memorial Fund provides grants to nonprofit organizations promoting agriculture as a career, using agriculture or farm animals as learning tools for youth, working to save dogs and horses from being destroyed after their productive lives are over, or providing educational opportunities for youth involved in agriculture.

Pauline Draper Fisher Scholarship Fund

Founded by Ms. Fisher’s estate provisions for graduating seniors of Catoctin High School who are enrolled to attend Towson University.

Mrs. Fisher, a graduate of Towson State College (now Towson University), was an elementary teacher in Florida and Maryland. She retired in 1988, after dedicating 35 years to students. A resident of Thurmont, she was a life-long Orioles fan, and also a fan of Ravens football. In her free time, she enjoyed her family and friends, as well as baking and bowling.
