Educator’s Passion for Learning Lives On in New Fund

Smiling man in blue shirtFREDERICK, MD – April 2, 2025: In memory of her husband, Marisa Hombach created The Michael A. Hombach Scholarship Fund to provide scholarships for students studying in the fields of education and behavioral health. This becomes one of more than 818 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

Michael Hombach spent 24 years working in Frederick County Public Schools, starting as a school therapist before transitioning to a pupil personnel worker and eventually serving as an assistant principal at Urbana High School and, most recently, Walkersville High School. He was also a Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical, and counseled individual clients for more than two decades.

Michael cherished family time and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed boating, water skiing, taking trips to the beach or a family property in the mountains, and gathering around campfires. He was a lifelong learner and avid reader.

Michael was dedicated to helping students succeed and thrive and with each scholarship awarded, his work will continue.

“He had an amazing ability to connect and support people and that legacy will continue with these scholarships,” Marisa shared. “We hope that Michael’s legacy inspires others to service, provides hope, encourages, and brings humor to the challenges in the lives of people who need it most.”

As a leader in grant and scholarship funding, The Community Foundation of Frederick County has infused more than $102 million into the community since 1986.
