Nathan W. Farlow Memorial Fund for Excellence

Founded by his family to provide post-secondary scholarships to students who are active members of a faith-based organization and have demonstrated community volunteerism and leadership, with a preference for homeschooled students.

To honor a life devoted to faith and the pursuit of excellence, The Nathan W. Farlow Memorial Fund for Excellence was established by Nathan’s wife, Jennifer, his parents Arnold W. and Elizabeth A. Farlow, and his siblings Catherine, Daniel, and Elizabeth Joy. The fund provides post-secondary scholarships to students who are active members of a faith-based organization and have demonstrated community volunteerism and leadership. Throughout his lifetime, Nathan possessed incredible internal drive, and is described by friends and family as having “lived 80 years of life in 26 years.” He valued his role as husband and father and he inspired his friends and youth group students to live purposefully. Sadly, on October 5, 2014, Nathan’s life was cut short by a drunk driver in Harris County, Texas. “Extraordinary is the word that describes Nathan’s person and actions,” said Mr. Farlow, Nathan’s father. “He was a person of boundless energy and had an uncompromising commitment to excellence. His Christian faith was at the core of everything he did, including his goal of inspiring everyone around him by his own example.”

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Frederick County Fund

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Frederick, County Fund was founded by Frances Anne Wenner with her 2010 Wertheimer Fellow for Excellence in Volunteerism Award. This Fund supports the mission of National Alliance on Mental Illness of Frederick County, which is to provide information, understanding, education and support for persons experiencing mental illness and their families.

Nellie C. Page Fund

Founded through Mrs. Page’s bequest to support Carroll Manor Fire and Rescue Company.

Nellie C. Page established The Nellie C. Page Fund through a bequest to support two organizations close to her heart during her lifetime, Jeanne Bussard Center and Carroll Manor Fire and Rescue Company. Mrs. Page felt a connection to Jeanne Bussard Center because of her close friendship with the Lease Bussard family, who started the center in honor of their daughter.  Carroll Manor Fire and Rescue Company was located near the Page farm and was a center of social activity for Mrs. Page. Unfortunately, the Jeanne Bussard Center closed. Though Mrs. Page is no longer living, Carroll Manor Fire and Rescue Company continues to benefit from her concern and involvement through this permanent fund.

Nicholas B. Jarvis Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by parents Darren and Mary Jarvis for Frederick, Urbana, or Tuscarora High Schools graduating seniors studying forestry, agriculture, land management, veterinary medicine, marine biology, early childhood education, history, science, and sports medicine.

Nicholas (Nick) B. Jarvis enjoyed playing baseball, football and basketball. A student at Carroll Manor Elementary School, he played on the Mudcats baseball team. In school, Nick was fascinated by social studies, eager to learn about Indians and the Civil War. He was also intrigued by science and wrote a report once in which he shared that he wanted to become a marine biologist or pursue a career in forestry or with wildlife. When the nine-year old passed away, his parents, Darren and Mary Jarvis, established The Nicholas B. Jarvis Memorial Scholarship Fund to help others pursue the same dreams Nick had. The specific high schools benefiting from this fund reflect ties close to the family, Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis attended Frederick High School; Urbana High School was particularly supportive of the family during their time of loss; and Tuscarora High School is most likely the high school Nick would have attended.
