Betty Markey Hooper Scholarship Fund

Mrs. Hooper’s children, Robert G. Hooper and Elizabeth M. Stauffer, established The Betty Markey Hooper Scholarship Fund in memory of their mother to provide scholarships to Walkersville High School graduating seniors who exhibit financial need and demonstrate a commitment to community service. Preference is given to those attending Hood College and those who are strong B students.

Betty Markey Hooper was a lifelong Frederick County resident who graduated from Frederick High School and later from Hood College. In 1941, she moved to Walkersville where she founded the Walkersville Play Center, a preschool for local students that she operated for 19 years. Mrs. Hooper’s children, Robert G. Hooper and Elizabeth M. Stauffer, turned to the Community Foundation after their mother’s passing in July 2004 to establish The Betty Markey Hooper Scholarship Fund in keeping with charitable intentions outlined in her estate planning. Mrs. Hooper’s legacy and love for education, as well as her commitment to the Walkersville community and her college alma mater, live on through her memorial fund.

Sharon I. Hooper Fund for Children

Founded by parents Mr. and Mrs. U. Mehrl Hooper for programs serving families with children coping with catastrophic illness.

Sharon I. Hooper graduated from Frederick High School in 1954. She continued her education at Hood College where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in music and completed her doctorate in education at the University of Maryland. She began her teaching career at North Frederick Elementary School and then became a music teacher at Catoctin High School. Ms. Hooper’s teaching career combined her two greatest loves: children and music. When she died of cancer in 1983, The Sharon I. Hooper Fund for Children was established by her parents U. Mehrl and Margaret T. Hooper. The fund serves families with children who are coping with catastrophic illness, a fitting way to remember a woman who loved children and worked with them all her life.
