James W. Main Educational Fund

Founded through Mr. Main’s bequest for scholarships for Brunswick High School scholar/athletes.

James W. Main was born in Brunswick, Maryland in 1920. He served in the South Pacific during World War II as a Navy officer. He spent most of his life working in the Brunswick community, serving as a member of the Brunswick Town Council, board member of the American Red Cross, and a life member of Ambulance Co. 19 and Brunswick Volunteer Fire Co. 5. He is best known as a beloved fan at every Brunswick High School sporting event. He took great pride in encouraging the athletes and following every dimension of Brunswick High School sports. At his death in 1990, part of his estate was used to create The James W. Main Educational Fund. In keeping with his love for Brunswick and Brunswick High School athletics, the fund provides a college scholarship for a Brunswick High School scholar-athlete.

Janet L. Michael Fund

Founded by Mrs. Michael to provide grants to The Salvation Army, The Weinberg Center for the Arts, Maryland Room of the C. Burr Arts Library, and The Spires Brass Band, Inc.

The Janet L. Michael Fund, established by Mrs. Michael, provides grants to four local nonprofits: The Salvation Army, The Weinberg Center for the Arts, The Maryland Room at the C. Burr Artz Library, and Spires Brass Band. Mrs. Michael was involved as a volunteer with The Salvation Army Auxiliary, and attends and enjoys concerts given by Spires Brass Band, as well as many events at the Weinberg Center. She also is an avid reader, and has utilized the resources of The Maryland Room many times. “I want to support organizations and activities that have given me a lot of enjoyment over the years,” said Mrs. Michael.

Janis Miller Wertheimer Endowment Fund

Founded through Mrs. Wertheimer’s estate to support community service organizations in Frederick County.

A lifelong Frederick County resident who graduated from Hood College in 1929, Mrs. Wertheimer served as Vice President of Nicodemus and Wertheimer, an insurance and real estate agency she owned and operated alongside her husband Philip. She was actively involved in the Frederick community until her death in 2001, serving as a member of Hood College Alumnae Association, Frederick Women’s Civic Club, Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Frederick County Landmarks Foundation, Historical Society of Frederick County, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Maryland Historical Society, the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary, Reserve Officer’s Auxiliary, Frederick Art Club, and Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick. In life, Mrs. Wertheimer created The Philip and Janis Wertheimer Fund for the Salvation Army/Frederick Corps with the Community Foundation to support the Salvation Army’s activities. Upon her death, the greater portion of her estate was bequeathed to the Community Foundation for the creation of two funds: The Philip and Janis Miller Wertheimer Fund, which supports six area organizations, and The Janis Miller Wertheimer Fund, which, in part, supports the Wertheimer Fellow for Excellence in Volunteerism program, recognizing outstanding volunteers. By supporting the good works of others, Mrs. Wertheimer’s legacy of making Frederick County the best it can be is realized in perpetuity.

Jay “Doc” Geiser Fund

Founded by family members in memory of Jay “Doc” Geiser to provide grants to the Frederick County Career and Technology Center to pay for supplies, tools and exams for students in culinary arts programs.

To honor a man who was known for his many talents, and to keep him in the hearts and minds of Frederick County, family members have established The Jay “Doc” Geiser Fund. Known in the community as “Doc” Geiser, Jay was a graduate of Governor Thomas Johnson High School, and he earned a master of the culinary arts from The Culinary Institute of America. After using his culinary talents at various places in Frederick, he purchased Watson’s Carry Out, which became Doc Geiser’s, well known for fried chicken, cole slaw, hot dogs, and hamburgers. Jay’s other talents included a passion for volunteering, and as an accomplished musician, playing in local bands. In addition, he was active and won many awards through his involvement with Toastmasters.
