George Wesley Gilbert Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by wife Freda Gilbert for Frederick County Public Schools graduates attending trade or technical schools.

A native of New Haven, Connecticut, George Wesley Gilbert worked as a mechanical engineer with the Department of the Navy in Carderock, Maryland. He served in World War II with the Army. After his discharge, he graduated from the Academy of Aeronautics in New York City at the top of his class. A professional mentor to many over the years, he often praised the practical, hands-on experience achieved through training at a trade or technical school. Mr. Gilbert and his wife Freda of 47 years lived in Kensington for 39 years before retiring to Frederick County. When Mr. Gilbert passed away, his wife established The George Wesley Gilbert Memorial Scholarship Fund in his memory to award scholarships for graduates of Frederick County Public Schools who are continuing their education at trade or technical schools.

Georgia Marie Abdow Fund

Founded by Mark and Michele Abdow in memory of their daughter as a donor advised fund, with preference given to organizations providing services to individuals and their families experiencing substance use disorder.

Georgia was a 2020 graduate of American University, where she studied public relations and marketing, with a focus on social media content for the entertainment industry. The loss of their daughter led the Abdows to create this fund, with the hope it can help others combat the negative effects that substance use disorder has on families and their children.

Gina M. Cumberland Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by husband Michael Cumberland for students pursuing post-secondary education in Maryland.

A generous heart, a life full of laughter, and a blessing to everyone who knew her are just a few of the ways that family and friends described Gina Cumberland, who passed away in late June 2017. To honor and remember her, The Gina M. Cumberland Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by her husband, Michael D. Cumberland. Post-secondary scholarships will be provided to students attending an educational institution in Maryland, and who have demonstrated community service or involvement, creating a legacy that exemplifies the love and kindness that Mrs. Cumberland always had for others.

Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital/Grants for Girls Fund

Founded by Frances A. Randall to support activities and camperships for Frederick County Girl Scouts.

Mrs. Randall’s lifelong involvement in Girl Scouting was well-known. She led troops for 20 years, and participated in Girl Scout Councils. The Penn Laurel Council named her a “Woman of Distinction” in 2000. Part of Camp Potomac Woods of the Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capitol, Randall Woods, was named in her honor. This fund, created in 1992, is one legacy that Mrs. Randall leaves to continue her support of a program in which she deeply believed.

Glade United Church of Christ Endowment Fund

Founded through a trust from the late Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Zimmerman for operating support.

Clayton and Phebe Zimmerman contributed to the farming community of Frederick County for 40 years, valuing hard work and traditional American values. Prior to owning their dairy farm in Ceresville, Mr. Zimmerman was the sales manager at Glade Valley Bakery in Walkersville, and Mrs. Zimmerman was a 1926 graduate of Towson Normal School and a schoolteacher. While operating the farm from 1962 to 1986, the Zimmermans lived a simple lifestyle. They had a woodstove to generate both hot water and heat and lived frugally. They gradually accumulated considerable profits from their labor and used it for the benefit of the Frederick County community. Through Mrs. Zimmerman’s will, four endowment funds were created with the Community Foundation to benefit Hood College, United Way of Frederick County, Hospice of Frederick County, and Frederick Memorial Hospital. In addition, through a charitable remainder trust, the Zimmermans founded The Glade United Church of Christ Endowment Fund. Generations of Frederick County residents, well into the future, will benefit from the Zimmermans” generosity through their careful estate planning and willingness to share their resources with the community they loved dearly.
