David A. Fogle Fund

Founded through Mr. Fogle’s bequest to support the Frederick National Little League.

David A. Fogle, who passed away in December 2013, was an avid supporter of high school and youth athletics. His coaching career, which began in 1982, included the Lions baseball team of Frederick National Little League, Frederick Babe Ruth League, and FSK Post 11 American Legion baseball team. Other sports related community activities included support of the Frederick Community College baseball program, serving on the Governor Thomas Johnson High School Sports Boosters, Frederick National Little League board of directors, and the YMCA’s Alvin G. Quinn Sports Hall of Fame committee. “My father coached baseball for more than 30 years,” said Mark Fogle, David’s son. “He considered the National Little League his summer family, because that’s how he spent every summer. His interest in baseball began when he was a child, as a Little League player with the Optimist team. His coaching began when I started to play tee ball and lasted the rest of his life. It was very special to him.”

The Miller’s dedication to the community is rooted in years of active involvement and support.

David G. Marshall Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by his family and Frederick Aviation, Inc., for students pursuing a career in the aviation industry.

Since childhood, David G. Marshall had a passion for flying. In high school, when his aspirations of attending the Naval Academy did not materialize, he did not let his love for aviation and overall dream to fly diminish. He went to Frederick Aviation directly after high school and worked on the flight line. During the same time, David took flying lessons and earned his private pilot’s license as well as his commercial license. In addition, he became a flight instructor. When a forklift accident claimed his life at Frederick Airport in 2000, family members created The David G. Marshall Memorial Scholarship Fund to help others achieve their aviation dreams. This fund provides scholarships to students who demonstrate financial need, academic promise, character, a love for aviation, and a desire to pursue careers in the aviation industry as David had done.

Dawn Renee Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by grandparents Charles and Jane Smith for graduates of Frederick County Public Schools, with preference given to Brunswick High School graduates pursuing a degree in marketing or a related field.

Dawn Renee Smith graduated from the Frederick County Career and Technology Center’s marketing program. She served as president of the Frederick County Delta Epsilon Chi Association (DECA), a national organization for marketing students, and received statewide recognition for her role in increasing the organization’s local membership. Active often in community service projects, Ms. Smith’s kindness and goodwill toward others defined her. When injuries sustained in a car accident shortly after her high school graduation claimed her life, her grandparents—Charles and Jane Smith—started awarding scholarships in her name as a way to remember her. In December 2004, Mr. and Mrs. Smith turned to the Community Foundation to establish The Dawn Renee Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund to help other students who exhibit qualities and interests similar to those of their granddaughter.
