William H. and Marianne E. Browning Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by son William H. Browning, Jr. for Frederick County residents attending Frederick Community College.

Mrs. Browning graduated from Mount Airy High School and married during her senior year at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College). She spent her life as a farmwife and homemaker. She was a charter member of the Kemptown and New Market Homemakers clubs, and the New Market Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary. She was an active member of Kemptown United Methodist Church. She volunteered as often as she could, and even volunteered at the voting polls. Marianne and her husband, William, will be remembered as generous people. The William H. and Marianne E. Browning Memorial Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to Frederick County residents who attend Frederick Community College.

William Hurwitz Memorial Endowment Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Hurwitz in memory of Mr. Hurwitz’s father as a donor advised fund.

William Hurwitz was a long time Frederick County resident and community leader. He founded Colonial Jewelers in downtown Frederick in 1948. In 1978, his son Jeff Hurwitz and wife Patty Hurwitz, joined the business, working closely with Mr. Hurwitz until his retirement. He sadly died of lung cancer in 1999. He was a mentor to the Hurwitzs’ and taught the importance of giving to the community and caring for others. Founded in his honor, The William Hurwitz Memorial Fund is a donor advised fund that provides support to various charitable endeavors in the Frederick County community.

William O. Lee, Jr. and Family Endowment Fund

Founded by Mr. Lee with his 2003 Wertheimer Fellow for Excellence in Volunteerism award for preserving Frederick County African American history and scholarships for graduating high school seniors who reside in the City of Frederick.

William O. Lee was an outstanding pillar of the Frederick County community. His impact on the community effected children to the elderly. He worked as a teacher, school principal and city alderman. He was a mentor, volunteer, churchgoer, nonprofit advocate, champion of local African American history, and involved citizen. In 2003 he was recognized as one of the Community Foundation’s first Wertheimer Fellows for Excellence in Volunteerism, acknowledging his years of service to the community. In his honor and memory, the Community Foundation holds The William O. Lee, Jr. and Family Endowment Fund. The fund provides grants to nonprofit organizations that are researching, restoring, archiving, cataloging and educating the community about Frederick County’s African American history and provides scholarships for high school seniors who reside in the City of Frederick.
